GIS for Regional Mapping

Geographic Information System (GIS) applied to integrated spatial analysis supported by socioeconomic data, aimed at territorial development, in the industrial area, on a regional scale.

The project consists of research applied to the development and improvement of a Geographic Information System (GIS) where its use provides support for integrated spatial analyzes based on social and economic data. Such research will objectively provide the design of an institutional GIS for immediate use in public management, targeting functional aspects related to territorial development, on a regional scale.

Given the coordinator's remarkable experience in the area of Digital Mapping, including investments in applied research involving the urban plan of the Açu Industrial and Port Complex (CIPA), where spatial transformations were highlighted as important items to compose the context of environmental impacts and economic benefits of the complex's projects (port, mining pipeline, steel mill, bulk yards and terminals, cement plant, thermoelectric plant, special ethanol storage yard, access point, steel products terminal, Liquefied Natural Gas terminal, etc...) In the north of Rio de Janeiro, this project was proposed, the execution of which was based on what has already been done in that region.

Digital mappings supported by GIS make it possible to enhance the management of projects in the industry, based on territorial units, with a strong opportunity for technological innovation, both in the GIS tool and in its application on public platforms. It is possible, based on IBGE data (PNAD and POF), to state that the implications of local and regional developments (Seropédica and surrounding areas) will require advance studies on relevant aspects of land occupation and use, for example. This goal can be achieved through institutional GIS, with intensive and broad use in the field of industry development and its branches: basic, transformation, extractive, light and heavy.

The project consisted of research applied to the development and improvement of a Geographic Information System (GIS) where its use provides support for integrated spatial analyzes based on social and economic data. This research objectively provided the opportunity to design an institutional GIS for immediate use in public management, targeting functional aspects related to territorial development, on a regional scale. Methodology will be developed with a focus on the spatialization of dynamic aspects of the location, extension and distribution of industries currently installed in the western portion of the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro.

Requirements were surveyed for the GIS project and its basic consultation and update services, where textual and numerical data will be linked to geographic features. The behavior of mapped geographic objects was also considered, since they have a dynamic character.

In light of engineering works interventions with greater concentration in the municipalities of Seropédica, Itaguaí and Rio de Janeiro, the SIG will deal with the economic impacts of large projects, with emphasis on: Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Road Arch; other works under the Federal Government's Growth Acceleration Program (PAC); Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico (CSA); Coin House; port of Sepetiba; FURNAS / Santa Cruz Thermoelectric Plant; and works related to the 2016 Olympics and 2014 World Cup.
